Did you guys know that all year I was a participant in a national educational research project with The National Center On Scaling Up Effective Schools? Today I was asked why I write my blog; please allow me to explain. My participation in this national research project has been a huge part of why I write this blog. I am piloting a program entitled, Personal Social & Academic Learning, (PSAL) for the Center. In a nutshell, the researchers are collecting data to study how;
“developing students personal and social capability as they learn to understand themselves and others and manage their relationships, lives, work and learning more effectively. This research project studies how teachers can play a role in guiding students in a range of practices including recognizing and regulating emotions, developing empathy for others and understanding relationships, establishing and building positive relationships, making responsible decisions, working effectively in teams, handling challenging situations constructively and developing leadership skills. Students with well-developed social and emotional skills find it easier to manage themselves, relate to others, develop resilience and a sense of self-worth, resolve conflict, engage in teamwork and feel positive about themselves and the world around them. The development of personal and social capability is a foundation for learning and for citizenship.”
As an active participant in the District Innovation Design Team at Blanche Ely High School, teams of researchers, professors and people working on PSAL research visit our art classroom in order to collect valuable data to be used to help the team understand the practice that promotes positive changes in urban high schools, classrooms, and student performance.
We have so many visitors who come into our classroom to watch me teach, but I wanted you to know that many of those visitors were from the National Center On Scaling Up Effective Schools.
I believe that the best teachers are those who can build a sense of community in their classrooms and implement the PSAL philosophy!
