My Future Plans...

4/17/2015

I know today was tough with the news that I will be resigning at the end of the year,  but I want to take a moment to reiterate my reasons and to express to all of you how much I have loved being your teacher and my time at Ely High. I must begin first by saying that I never intended for you guys to hear from someone else.  I am very disappointed in the staff member who told her classes this information, it was a private matter. It was my intention to wait until the last week of school to tell you guys, however, now we must be the great family that we are and discuss it.
There is an old saying that says, "People come into your life for a reason, a season or for a lifetime". Teachers cannot stay with you for a lifetime, they are only in your life for a season. Our season together has been the best two years of my career. I know that all of my students know that I am sincere because you feel my love for you daily. I have given you so much of my passion and expertise in art and it is now time for me to step aside so that another can give you all of their expertise. We learn different things from different people.
My heart will always have a place in it for Ely. I will cherish my memories of all of you and of all of the fun we shared together. With the Internet, we will stay connected and I will have the pleasure of seeing all of you grow into amazing young men and women who will contribute so much to our society...this I am sure!
I want  to let you guys know that I am moving to Washington DC to be closer to my family and to help take care of my aging parents. My parents are in their 80's and the burden of their care has been on my two brothers. I have no real ties to Florida so I feel that I need to go back home to be close to family.
I am proud to say that I will be teaching in the District of Columbia Public Schools and they are bringing me into their district as a Capital Commitment Fellow, I signed an early offer contract last month. It is a step forward in my career. Here's a brief explanation of CCF.

"The Capital Commitment Fellowship is a selective cohort of   experienced educators who are new to DCPS and who are motivated to work to close the achievement gap by   continuing their teaching career in a high-needs classroom. Capital Commitment Fellows are individuals who have a track record of success with students and will become  teacher leaders in DCPS, and, therefore, are placed at a  higher LIFT level than other incoming teachers."

I am very excited and honored to have been chosen for such a prestigious fellowship and it is my intention to teach in a high-needs urban school so that my life can continue to make a difference in the lives of children and in this world. I love you guys and I love Ely. We will talk more about this in the upcoming days. I know today was a shocker and I feel bad that this all came out on a Friday. We'll continue this conversation Monday. Ms. B.
